A Vocabulary for Creative Practices

Genius / 21 Century / Seattle (Frye Art Museum)

Overview

The Frye Art Museum launched Genius / 21 Century / Seattle as a large-scale celebration of exceptional artistic practice in contemporary Seattle. The exhibition featured over 65 artists, filmmakers, dancers, musicians, writers and more, filling the galleries of the museum with art alongside a full calendar of performances, screenings, and events. The museum approached Schema to create a standalone website that would capture the dynamism of the exhibition and serve as both communication channel as well as archive.

Process

Schema worked closely with the internal team to create a flexible framework for a rich information experience. One key focus area was the development of tags, which allowed users to enter into and discover content fluidly, without an overly prescriptive structure. The decision was made to use Tumblr to host the site, as it gave the Frye a built-in way to reach their social media audience.

Outcome

The tags allow users to discover art and events through the association of words and the relationship of concepts. The resulting website effectively highlights the themes and concerns of Seattle artists, and provides a snapshot of the creative community at a particular moment in time.
